After all the heavy rain we've had recently, we were wondering if we might have to cancel this event. However, after an unpromising start, the weather cleared to give is a bright and mild afternoon for our workday. 10 of us met up by the main entrance to Shirtcliffe Valley at Schubert Bridge. There were 7 FoS members, 2 Rangers, and a member of the public. We split up into small teams, each team choosing an area to clear. Somehow, it all seemed to work out! We worked steadily through the Valley for 2 hours, picking litter and clearing blockages from the stream. One of the members volunteered for the unenviable task of barrowing rubbish to the collection points - he must have covered some miles! In the time allocated, we managed to work right through the Valley to the bottom of Smelter Wood. As a result, the Valley is well spruced up for the summer.
