Description | Course Narrative: 1. Introduction to handling, caring for and selecting carving tools (40 min to 1hr) 2. Whittling vs carving - making a simple, monogrammed walking stick or letter opener - green wood carving (using special knives) Lunch break 3. How to start a bowl or seat bottom, OR carving your name - demonstration of hardwood carving (spoon gouges, draw knives, using a malet and chisel etc). Participants to learn use tools on practice pieces - offer of carving a name plate or start a bowl/spoon Each participant will go away with two items they have made (or started to make) themselves and the basic knowledge of how to use sharp tools safely. They will need to bring a packed lunch a plenty to drink. Tools and all materials will be provided, and first aid (trainer is first aid qualified). Parents and children MUST be prepared for the possibility of minor cuts and bruises. You cannot learn without the odd small mistake. A full risk assessment will cover this event to control risks and to this end I will require an undertaking of all participants that they: a. Listen to the instructor carefully and follow instructions b. Do not pass on what they have learned to a novice (that is when serious accidents happen) |
