International Women’s Day: Talk on Ethel Haythornthwaite and Higger Tor Walk. Cost: £7.50.
In celebration of International Women’s Day and 100 years of CPRE Peak District and South Yorkshire (CPRE PDSY), the National Trust are hosting a talk on the life and work of Ethel Haythornthwaite followed by a guided walk up Higger Tor.
We will hear from Cassa Townsend, CPRE PDSY Engagement Lead, about Ethel’s campaigning and environmental activism, which protected greenspace surrounding Sheffield and the Peak District including Longshaw Estate. This dedicated work eventually led to the establishment of the Sheffield Green Belt and Britain’s first National Park, the Peak District.
Afterwards, there will be a guided walk up Higger Tor, the closest ‘Ethel’ to Longshaw Estate. The Ethels are 95 hills in the Peak District devised by CPRE Peak District and South Yorkshire supporter and hillwalker Doug Colton and are named in tribute to Ethel Haythornthwaite. Please wear suitable outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear. Bring a packed lunch and plenty of water.
Accessibility
This 8km walk is moderately challenging, includes a steep ascent, and follows an uneven footpath. Dogs on leads are welcome but there may be some stiles.
