Description This 1-day conference is being organised with PLACE (People, Landscape & Cultural Environment of Yorkshire) as their spring conference. The topics covered reflect some of the breadth of variety in both the landscapes and the industrial legacies which can be seen across South Yorkshire and around Sheffield in particular. Speakers and topics for the day are: Professor Melvyn Jones – The Wentworth-Fitzwilliams of Wentworth Woodhouse: Industrial Entrepreneurs for three centuries; Professor David Hey – The Wilson family (Sheffield’s Snuff Mill owners) and the Stanage Moors Estate (grouse moor); Dr. Leona Skelton - Regulating a Pre-Modern, Industrial, Urban landscape: Street Cleaning, Waste-disposal and Insanitary Nuisances in Sheffield, 1500-1700; Derek Bayliss – Wortley Top Forge and Rockley Furnace and the work of the South Yorkshire Industrial History Society; and Professor Ian Rotherham – South Yorkshire’s Rivers, Heaths & Bogs: Industrial Impacts and Legacies.
